Thallium Isotope Fractionation During Magma Degassing: Evidence From Experiments and Kamchatka Arc Lavas

چکیده

Thallium (Tl) isotope ratios are an emerging tool that can be used to trace crustal recycling processes in arc lavas and ocean island basalts (OIBs). is a highly volatile metal enriched volcanic fumaroles, but it unknown whether degassing of Tl from subaerial has significant effect on their residual compositions. Here, we present concentration data experiments best explained by Rayleigh kinetic fractionation during loss. Our closely follow predicted models which TlCl the primary degassed species where loss controlled diffusion natural convection, consistent with slow gas advection velocity utilized our experiments. We calculate into air should associated net factor ?net = 0.99969 for convection (low velocities) 0.99955 forced (high velocities). also show three volcanoes Kamchatka exhibit patterns plot between two different regimes, implying played important role controlling observed compositions these volcanoes. Literature inspection reveals majority appear only minorly affected degassing, although few samples both OIBs identified likely experienced some degassing.

Oxygen Isotope Geochemistry of Oceanic-Arc Lavas

Variations of oxygen isotope ratios in arc-related lavas can constrain trace-element enrichment in a mantle source being fluxed by addition the contributions of subducted crustal igneous rocks, sediments, and of aqueous fluid. Comparison of this model with observed variations fluids to the sub-arc mantle. We have measured oxygen isotope in the geochemistry of lavas from the Vanuatu–Fiji–New Cal...

Behaviour of high field strength elements in subduction zones: constraints from Kamchatka–Aleutian arc lavas

Models explaining the characteristic depletion of High Field Strength Elements (HFSE) relative to elements of similar compatibility in subduction zone magmas invoke either (1) the presence of HFSE-rich minerals in the subduction regime or (2) a selectively lower mobility of HFSE during subduction metasomatism of the mantle. In order to investigate the properties of HFSE in subduction regimes cl...

Insights into Li and Li isotope cycling and sub-arc metasomatism from veined mantle xenoliths, Kamchatka

Harzburgitic xenoliths cut by pyroxenite veins from Avachinsky volcano, Kamchatka, are derived from the sub-arc mantle and record element transfer from the slab to the arc. Olivine and orthopyroxene in the harzburgites have Li isotopic compositions (dLi = ?2.8 to ?5.6) comparable to estimates of the upper mantle (dLi * ?4 ± 2). The pyroxenite veins, which represent modal metasomatism and may th...
